THE CLIENT: Service Organization – Private Health Care and Rehabilitation Services

THE CHALLENGE

The organizational needs of this growing and profitable services company had outgrown the managerial talents of the health professionals who were trying to direct it. Owner had concerns that poor working relationships within the management team were limiting the company’s potential.

THE APPROACH

Interviewed and assessed functionality of the current managers and team; provided part-time human resources expertise to develop structures to support growth and support the regional managers; provided regional and overall operational management, in three stages.

THE RESULT

Stage 1 (6 days assignment):

· Analyzed management functioning and prepared a report, which recommended termination of the incumbent second-in-command and the restructuring of the management team

· Advised the President through the termination process

· Restructured the team of Regional Managers by providing them with more autonomy and profit and loss responsibility

Stage 2 (2 days per week for 6 months):

· Redesigned the compensation systems for both professional staff and managers, including profit sharing for latter

· Developed basic budgeting models; oriented Regional Managers

· Developed and implemented comprehensive HR policies, recruitment procedures and performance appraisal systems for staff and managers

· Recruited and trained a Controller and one Regional Manager

· Instituted bi-weekly management teleconferences and quarterly face-to-face meetings to harmonize tactics

· Led management team through the development of an initial marketing/positioning plan

· Recruited a Marketing Assistant to operationalize the plan

Stage 3 (2 days per week for next 6 months):

· Analyzed and streamlined operational procedures

· Assumed responsibility for internal operations, including supervision of Regional Managers

· Allowed President to concentrate on external networking, marketing and business development

Ongoing (4 days per week):

· Vice President - responsible for all aspects of operations, countrywide

· Regional management – central Ontario

· Participation in sales efforts, strategic planning and regional expansion
