Organizations often ask why they should hire an external Interim<\/span>\u00a0Executive Director (ED) rather than promote a senior manager to an Acting ED position until a permanent ED is hired. While an internal appointment is sometimes an option there are several reasons an external Interim ED serves your organization better, including:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span><\/b>essen<\/span><\/b>ing<\/span><\/b> the possibility of <\/span><\/b>executive burnout that often results from adding the interim position responsibilities to a current senior manager\u2019s role.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Often when a senior manager is appointed as the interim <\/span>ED<\/span> they are undertaking that role in addition to their current responsibilities. This can result in burnout and neither role having the full attention of the individual.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An i<\/span>nterim\u202fED\u202fcan\u202foffer a fresh perspective on your organization\u2019s strengths and challenges. An Interim ED often <\/span>assists<\/span> an organization to develop new directions that enable it to move out of a<\/span>n <\/span>entrenched<\/span> pattern of decision\u2013making that <\/span>perpetuates underlying<\/span>\u00a0challenges<\/span>. They also may complete an organizational review to help your organization examine what is really going on\u202fthrough a fresh set of eyes. This can result in new\u202fsolutions\u202fto old problems.\u202f\u202f<\/span>As Albert Einstein said, \u201cWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Providing an organization with time, after the departure of an ED under questionable circumstances, to resolve outstanding issues.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coming into an organization that is in a \u201ccrisis\u201d mode\u202fdue to the unexpected departure of its ED\u202fprovides\u202fthe Interim ED\u202fwith an opportunity to assess the strengths, challenges<\/span>,<\/span> and needs of the organization.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Allowing the Interim ED to act as the change agent when change is required.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Experienced Interim\u202fEDs\u202fcan\u202fencourage necessary\u202fchange\u202fin your organization.\u202fAn Interim ED\u202foften brings\u202fabout necessary change prior to the\u202frecruitment of the\u202fpermanent ED. This allows the permanent ED\u202fto quickly move forward with a renewed organization, without having to own the change process and the potential unrest\u202fthat comes with it.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though there are many advantages to hiring an Interim ED,\u202fit\u2019s not a flawless solution.
