Some workplaces and businesses were included, but only those that have the capability to maintain\u00a0prevention\u00a0measures\u00a0currently in place.\u00a0The rest of us\u00a0will have to\u00a0wait.\u00a0However,\u00a0there is\u00a0still\u00a0plenty\u00a0of planning you can do now\u00a0to ensure that\u00a0your\u00a0reopening goes\u00a0as\u00a0smoothly\u00a0as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some key areas\u00a0for consideration as you plan for\u00a0the reopening of your office.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Educate staff on the virus\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>There is a lot of misinformation or assumptions\u00a0around the virus.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0important that staff fully understand the real risk and transmission of the virus.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>COVID-19 is a virus spread via droplets. In other words, you can only catch the virus if you ingest droplets from someone who is COVID-19 positive, even if they have no symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Close contact\u00a0with\u00a0a COVID-19 positive individual increases risk of exposure\u00a0of\u00a0contracting the virus.<\/li>\n<li>Close contact is defined by Health Canada as\u00a0having unprotected contact (no\u00a0personal\u00a0protective\u00a0equipment on either party) within 2 metres or 6 feet of a COVID -19 positive individuals from 10 to 15 minutes\u00a0or longer or<\/li>\n<li>unprotected\u00a0contact with\u00a0respiratory secretions (sneezing, coughing) or fecal matter from a person with COVID-19 (with no PPE on either party)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best way to protect one\u2019s self is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to\u00a0practice social distancing (2 metres or 6 feet\u00a0apart)\u00a0always<\/li>\n<li>to\u00a0wash\u00a0hands regularly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds<\/li>\n<li>Only\u00a0touch\u00a0your\u00a0face\u00a0with freshly washed\u00a0hands<\/li>\n<li>Cover your cough or sneeze and then practice good hand hygiene immediately<\/li>\n<li>Wear a mask to prevent the risk of\u00a0spreading the virus inadvertently to others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Decide\u00a0who comes back to work and when\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Should\u00a0all employees\u00a0return on the same day or\u00a0in\u00a0stages?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You may want to re-open in stages. For example, there\u00a0may be\u00a0some roles that are having a more difficult time working from home.\u00a0For example,\u00a0Accounts payable\u00a0might be a priority\u00a0as perhaps not all invoices come\u00a0in\u00a0electronically.<\/li>\n<li>Some\u00a0staff could\u00a0come for a few weeks and test the protocols then the rest\u00a0could join\u00a0when you feel you have\u00a0any\u00a0challenges sorted out<\/li>\n<li>You\u00a0may choose to\u00a0stagger work hours to limit the number of people in the office at\u00a0the same\u00a0time<\/li>\n<li>People in individual offices may feel safer than those who work in\u00a0cubicles.\u00a0\u00a0Consider\u00a0installing\u00a0protective shields to protect those\u00a0who are working in cubicles<\/li>\n<li>Anyone in a high-risk group may\u00a0need to\u00a0work from home for an\u00a0extended\u00a0period\u00a0or until cleared to\u00a0return to work\u00a0by their medical doctor.\u00a0Typically, at-risk\u00a0individuals\u00a0are those\u00a0over 70 years old\u00a0or\u00a0anyone with an\u00a0underlying health condition which increases\u00a0the risk\u00a0of\u00a0contracting COVID-19. These individuals should provide supporting documentation from their doctors. (Typically, asthma and heart conditions and other immune-suppressing disorders.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Establish\u00a0Cleaning and PPE protocols\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Staff will want to know what the cleaning routines are for the building\u00a0and\u00a0for the offices. There are protocols set out by public health that indicate the standard cleaning requirements. You may want to\u00a0ask for\u00a0information from your landlord\u00a0and office cleaners to ensure it meets the public health standard. You should share the cleaning\u00a0regimens with staff.<\/p>\n<p>Consider questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u00a0protocols are in place for\u00a0the kitchen area? Do you use recyclable cups and\u00a0dishes\u00a0so that people\u00a0are not\u00a0exposed to\u00a0other people\u2019s saliva that might be on a cup, glass,\u00a0plate\u00a0or cutlery? Do you\u00a0ask\u00a0staff to clean their reusable dishes and cutlery themselves after each use?<\/li>\n<li>What about hand sanitizer? Will you provide it for staff?<\/li>\n<li>Will\u00a0you\u00a0need to provide hand soap at the kitchen sink?<\/li>\n<li>What is your protocol about staff wearing\u00a0masks?\u00a0Do they wear\u00a0masks,\u00a0or do they simply need to maintain social\u00a0distancing?\u00a0Is it optional?\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"16\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Surgical paper masks are good for about 2 hours and then need to be replaced\u00a0as they get damp. You will need to educate\u00a0staff\u00a0on the removing and disposing of masks.<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"16\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">If they use reusable cloth masks,\u00a0they will need to make sure they are washed every night.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What things might\u00a0you need to order and in what quantities?<\/li>\n<li>What is your expectation around\u00a0deliveries?\u00a0Who touches them and how?<\/li>\n<li>How will you manage meetings?<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"15\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Will people take them\u00a0from\u00a0their office location over\u00a0video\u00a0or will you\u00a0sit in\u00a0a meeting\u00a0room with 2\u00a0metres\u00a0between you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Set\u00a0guidelines\u00a0around\u00a0illness and being at work\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Consider a policy that encourages employees feeling ill\u00a0to work from home. Any staff member or person who they\u00a0are living\u00a0with who has\u00a0COVID-19 like symptoms should get tested and self-isolate\u00a0from up to a maximum of 14 days from when they had symptoms. Those with symptoms\u00a0should go for testing and can return to work if\u00a0they have a negative test result.\u00a0Staff should\u00a0only\u00a0return to work after a\u00a0negative test\u00a0result.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone\u00a0who\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0exposed\u00a0to\u00a0someone\u00a0(see definition of exposure\u00a0above)\u00a0and is at high risk from exposure needs to have a\u00a0negative\u00a0test\u00a0result\u00a0prior to returning to work.\u00a0While waiting for the negative test they need to self-isolate at home.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has been in close contact\u00a0(see definition above)\u00a0within 48 hours of someone contracting COVID-19 needs\u00a0to get tested. They can only return to work with a negative test result.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, any employee working from home as part of a policy to self-isolate will be paid for the time they are at home.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Seek\u00a0general\u00a0feedback from staff re COVID-19 concerns\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Hold\u00a0a\u00a0virtual\u00a0staff meeting\u00a0to\u00a0ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"15\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">for input on things,<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"15\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">about their fears or concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Give them an option to\u00a0provide\u00a0feedback\u00a0during\u00a0the meeting or by email if they\u00a0prefer.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or clarification on any of these areas, you may contact Principal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/osborne\/project\/hisey-sarah\/\">Sarah Hisey<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week,\u00a0Premier\u00a0Ford\u00a0announced\u00a0phase 1\u00a0of a plan to ease restrictions related to COVID-19.
