There is always\u00a0<\/span>a great deal of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>talk about leadership in the\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>ing world<\/span>, during a global pandemic or otherwise.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I know about this because I have been a Leadership Consultant for over twenty years to organizations like Blackberry, AT&T and the Department of National Defense, Governmen<\/span>t of Canada<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am certified in, have\u00a0<\/span>delivered<\/span>\u00a0and coached to thousands of leadership 360 assessments.\u00a0<\/span>Key leadership behaviours are identified by decision-makers and leaders at all levels in an organization <\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>are then scientifically assessed against competencies like \u2018Strategic,\u2019 \u2018Innovative,\u2019 \u2018Collaborative.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal in such a process is to \u2018move the dot,\u2019 in other words to demonstrate to\u00a0<\/span>co-workers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>you\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>visibly more \u2018Strategic,\u2019 more\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Innovative,\u2019 or more \u2018Collaborative<\/span>,<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0sufficiently that your assessment score \u2018dots\u2019 move when you are reassessed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you ask me, though, my measure of leadership involves three key\u00a0<\/span>elements<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span><\/b>isdom<\/span><\/b> is d<\/span>efined as \u201cthe quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgment\u201d. The jury is out on whether wisdom can be taught. <\/span>In my roles\u00a0<\/span>as<\/span>\u00a0Interim Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, this attribute has always been the most essential.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Discernment<\/span><\/b>\u00a0refers to \u2018the ability to judge well.\u2019 Leaders have great judgment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Courage<\/span><\/b>, without saying is the ability and the willingness to do \u2018what is tough.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My note, though, and a note shared by many is that we are\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>leaders.\u00a0<\/span>Regardless of our role,\u00a0<\/span>status<\/span>\u00a0or station,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>e all\u00a0have the ability to\u00a0demonstrate each day at work or otherwise the positive outcomes of<\/span> our experience, knowledge and good judgment. How would we demonstrate this? \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What do successful people do that unsuccessful people do not? Three simple\u00a0<\/span>things<\/span>: they\u00a0<\/span>arrive on time,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>they\u00a0<\/span><\/i>finish what they start, and <\/span><\/i>they\u00a0<\/span><\/i>do what they say <\/span><\/i>they<\/span><\/i>\u00a0will do.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0A well-known coach once shared this message and\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0never forgotten it!\u00a0<\/span>Neither have the thousands of individuals I have coached over the years as many have said that of all the things they remembered, these three things really stuck.\u00a0<\/span>Oh yes, there is a fourth.<\/span>\u00a0Successful people say, \u2018please\u2019 and \u2018thank you.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Simple. Perhaps not easy. But, you\u2019ll know a leader by these three (four) simple behaviours.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
