As I look back, I can identify 4\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">phases that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reflect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0my unique journey<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from fixer to leader and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0manager.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> In this blog post, I\u2019ll detail these phases and hopefully <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provide some clarity through comparison to your own journey. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the beginning,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">remember being hired\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by a small start-up company<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on a temporary assignment. My boss was the interim CFO who explained to me that he had a board meeting coming up and needed a Balance Sheet. I was surprised by the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">request,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wondering how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0possible that their accounting system could not produce the most fundamental\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and essential\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">statement. It turned out that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0previous CFO, although a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">well-qualified<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Chartered Accountant, had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">initiated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0an accounting system conversion and had lost control of the process.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reports could not be provided to the bank, vendors were not being paid, bank statements were not reconciled to the G\/L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0etc.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As such, the company did not know if it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0making a profit, if it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0enough cash to meet payroll or if it had the capacity to borrow to grow the business as was its mission.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I remember spending the weekend solving the problem of the Balance Sheet.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ver<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hundred accounts in the chart of accounts had to be tagged and grouped with precision otherwise the financial statements<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">balance nor\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">convey the true<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0financial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0state of the company<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I learnt early on that th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">skill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to convert and integrate an accounting system<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not taught at any professional school\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i.e.,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0CPA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0MBA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">critical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0enough that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, if not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">done<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0properly,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the financial control of a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ny<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0business\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">comes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to a grinding halt.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This phase I would call the\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDeveloper<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Phase\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Soon after\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this experience,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the company\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hired\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">me as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the controller. As the company grew<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, so did<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the volume of information.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My understanding of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0accounting software<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, having been involved with it during the development phase<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> allowing for a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hands<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on approach to process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0information<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0efficiently and effectively<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The skills needed at this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">phase were different from the \u201cDeveloper phase\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. To process the ever-increasing information, there was a need\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to multi-task,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maintain a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0high\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">level of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">energy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0focus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and always<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0look<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0opportunit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to increase efficiency<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I would call this the\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDoer phase\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Again<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the skills\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for this phase had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to be gained through experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The company continued to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grow,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the accounting department expanded. The \u2018doing\u2019 skills had to be replaced with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0management\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">skills\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">such as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0delegating, mentoring<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">motivating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and communicating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0These skills were developed during my\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cManage<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0phase\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Without these skills<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0once highly effective \u2018doer\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0often<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">does<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the tasks\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">themself<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">order to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0maintain the high standard\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">achieved.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Delegation is no<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n-existent or sporadic.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The negative effects of this approach include personal stress, demotivation of staff,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lowering of standards, department<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">al<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bottlenecks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the exposure\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">department<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0able to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">function properly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">absence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over the year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the company expanded nationally through an aggressive acquisition strategy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Almost half\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of my time was now spent travelling across the country <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">doing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">due diligence, meeting with owners,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lawyer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and bank<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and dealing with integration challenges at the home office. I call this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPlanning and Leadership phase\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I no longer had the time to manage hands-on but now required\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018surveillance reporting\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that would allow me to maintain tight controls\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">over the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0large volume of information<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0It was also necessary to devise concise higher-level reports that identified \u201chotspots\u201d and that met strategic planning needs.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The focus during this phase was on transparency.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0By proper<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0structuring reporting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0possible to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0navigate through a large volume of information and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0maintain a high level of control\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">over it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ver 25 years later, th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is same<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0company is now Canada\u2019s largest physiotherapy company with over 2,500 highly trained clinician<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in over 300 locations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0across the country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, as an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Osborne<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0consultant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m leveraging this experience to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0help\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">companies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maintain control over their finance department and their business during the various stages of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">growth.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You can reach me by email at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"mailto:nnizam@localhost\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">nnizam@localhost<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0if\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you\u2019re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0interested in a follow-up conversation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.3&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;
